Verlander’s Elbow

Justin Verlander needs Tommy John surgery:

“I truly believe everything that everything happens for a reason, and although 2020 has sucked, hopefully, when this rehab process is all said and done, this will allow me to charge through the end of my career and be healthy as long as I want and pitch as long as I want and accomplish some of the goals that I want in my career.”

Verlander will basically miss his seasonal age 37 and 38 seasons. His outlook appears to be that a renewed elbow will allow him to pitch longer. Unfortunately, the rest of his body will be old in baseball terms.

He pitches as a super-competitor, however. I can imagine this star remaking himself in the essence of Tommy John, throwing slow, hitting spots, and baffling batters with his great control. I don’t know if he has that in mind, but I can see if he runs into trouble after the surgery that he might go in that direction just to try to stay on the mound.
