Last night a radio host posed a question to me about end of season winning streaks, given the Yankees had won nine in a row (now ten) as they head for the end of the season. The question was, “What are the longest end of season win streaks for teams that made the playoffs?” I can go back to 1920, so here are streaks of at least eight games to end the season, teams going to the playoffs marked with an asterisk.
Season | Team | Streak |
1960 | NYA* | 15 |
1971 | BAL* | 11 |
1970 | BAL* | 11 |
2013 | CLE* | 10 |
1937 | PIT | 10 |
1974 | BAL* | 9 |
1964 | CHA | 9 |
1979 | NYA | 8 |
2002 | SFN* | 8 |
2018 | MIL* | 8 |
1942 | BRO | 8 |
2019 | WSH* | 8 |
2015 | CHN* | 8 |
What I find impressive is that the great majority of these streaks were by teams headed to the playoffs. Note that only two of the teams that made the playoffs with a strong finish went on the win the World Series, the 1970 Orioles and the 2019 Nationals. With eight games left, the Yankees have a shot at beating their own record for the time period.
So now you’ve made me curious–how about longest losing streaks at the end of the season for teams that made the playoffs?
The 2000 Yankees lost their last seven games.
