More Playoff Teams

The Padres make the playoffs for the first time in 14 years:

Finally, for the first time since 2006 and just the sixth time in their 52 seasons of existence, the Padres are headed to the postseason.

They clinched that berth by beating the Seattle Mariners 7-4 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon in a nearly empty ballpark, with just a few dozen team employees and the faces of a thousand fans affixed to cardboard cutouts looking on.

They are one of five possible recently tanking teams that might make the playoffs. Teams tank because it’s a good way to rebuild. Combine that with a short season in which anything can happen, and the tanking pays off.

The Yankees lost today, but with Seattle losing the Yankees clinch a playoff berth as well. So seven of the 16 teams are set, five in the AL.
