Beat the Streak Picks

For the past few years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. MLB is not offering the game during the short 2020 season, but people indicated they can still use the data. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit. If you find this useful, please support Baseball Musings with a donation.

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

Here are the Log5 Method picks:

The White Sox lifted Anderson after an 0 for three yesterday in a game they did not need to win. That ended the NN’s longest streak of the season at eleven games. Note that late in the year, teams that clinched are going to rest stars to make sure they are ready for the playoffs.

Here are the NN picks:

  • 0.337, 0.762 — Tim Anderson batting against Aaron Civale.
  • 0.318, 0.739 — Donovan Solano batting against German Marquez.
  • 0.283, 0.731 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Matthew Shoemaker.
  • 0.312, 0.728 — Trea Turner batting against Zack Wheeler.
  • 0.312, 0.723 — Jose Abreu batting against Aaron Civale.
  • 0.277, 0.711 — Salvador Perez batting against Adam Wainwright.
  • 0.300, 0.710 — David Fletcher batting against Kyle Gibson.
  • 0.276, 0.709 — Jeff McNeil batting against Peter Fairbanks.
  • 0.275, 0.704 — Michael Brantley batting against Marco Gonzales.
  • 0.307, 0.700 — Jean Segura batting against Anibal Sanchez.

The two systems agree today on Anderson and Solano as the top two picks.

You can follow the NN results on this spreadsheet. I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!
