Perranoski Passes

Former relief pitcher Ron Perranoski died on Friday. It’s been a bad week for former players, with Bob Gibson, Lou Johnson, and Jay Johnstone passing in the last few days

Perranoski’s best year with the Dodgers came in 1963, when he won 16-3 as a full-time reliever and earned a save in relief of Johnny Podres in Game 2 of the World Series against the Yankees. He had 21 saves to go with a 1.67 ERA. The Dodgers swept the Yankees in four games.

In the 1965 World Series, Perranoski made two relief appearances and the Dodgers won the championship over the Minnesota Twins, with Johnson hitting two homers, including the game winner in Game 7.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Perranoski led the NL in games pitched three times and games finished twice. When saves became an official statistic in 1969, Perranoski was with the Twins led the AL the first two seasons, with 31 in 1969 and 34 in 1970.

His strength as a pitcher was keeping the ball in the park, giving up just 50 home runs in 1174 2/3 innings. He ended his career with a 2.79 ERA.
