Yimi’s Bad Day

The Miami Marlins led the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Tuesday afternoon, when Sixto Sanchez of the Marlins weakened in the seventh, allowing the first two Braves to reach base. That brought in Yimi Garcia to pitch.

Garcia did not pitch much in 2020, but his 15 innings were outstanding. He allowed nine hits and five walks. That led to just one run, as he struck out 19 batters. In the wild card round, he pitched two inning with no runs and no walks, striking out two. He was the man for a high leverage situation.

Except for today. He induced Freddie Freeman to hit into a force play, but then Marcell Ozuna hit a game tying single, and Travis d’Arnaud followed with a three-run homer, and the Braves led 7-4. Atlanta would go on to win the game 9-5.

d’Arnaud posted the best day at the plate, with three hits and two walks in six trips to the plate, including a double. Max Fried had a tough day, giving up four runs in four innings, but the Braves bullpen held the Marlins to one more run, striking out seven batters in five innings with no walks. The Braves take a 1-0 lead in the NLDS series.

Ronald Acuna led off for the Braves in the bottom of the first with a home run. He became the youngest player to hit a lead-off home run post-season history.
