Dodgers Hold On

The Dodgers took a 6-3 lead into the top of the ninth as the Padres mounted a comeback. They scored a run on a Jake Cronenworth infield single and a pinch-hit double by Mitch Moreland. With two out, Trent Grisham singled to drive in Moreland and chase closer Kenley Jansen from the game in favor of Joe Kelly, facing the heart of the Padres lineup. Kelly goes to full counts on Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Manny Machado, walking both. He then get Eric Hosmer to ground out to second base, and the Dodgers take a 2-0 lead in the NLDS. They will switch designations today, the Padres facing elimination as the home team.

Cody Bellinger robbed Tatis of a home run earlier in the game:

The Padres were down one with a runner on and two outs in the seventh when Tatis, the 21-year-old budding superstar, hit a towering drive to center. Bellinger ran nearly 100 feet while watching the ball, then jumped and extended his gloved right hand above the 8-foot wall to make the grab.

“I just kind of turned around as fast as I could, got to the fence and saw that it was probable, so I decided to try to time up the jump, and it’s how it worked out,” Bellinger said. “I didn’t know if it was a homer or not, but I knew I caught it.”

As I noted last night, I’m enjoying watching the defense this post-season.

Three of the eleven runs in the game scored on home runs, putting the percent of runs scoring on home runs at 53.5.
