Playoffs Today

The Braves and Dodgers play game two of the NLCS starting at 6 PM EDT, 3 PM PDT. Ian Anderson takes on Clayton Kershaw, Kershaw’s Dodgers acting as the home team in Arlington, Texas. Anderson baffled post-season opponents so far. In 11 2/3 innings, he allowed just five hits and three walks, striking out 17. He has yet to allow a run. Kershaw won both his starts, walking one and striking out 19 in 14 innings of work. The Dodgers could use him going deep tonight. The Braves lead the series 1-0.

At 8:30 PM EDT, 5:30 PM PDT, Houston takes over as the home team in San Diego as the Rays send Ryan Yarbrough against Jose Urquidy in game three of the ALCS. Yarbrough represents the classic swing man, useful as a starter or a reliever. In his three seasons in the majors he moved from spot starter to sometimes reliever, but this will be his first start in the post-season. He pitched five effective relief inning against the Yankees in his last outing. Note that Yarbrough does not strikeout not walk many batters. The Rays defense will need to shine behind him.

Urquidy mirrors Yarbrough’s walk and strikeout rates. He has yet to last five innings as a starter in the post-season, but Lance McCuller’s fine outing on Monday means the bullpen is fresh.

The Rays lead the best of seven series 2-0.

Enjoy!

Update: The Dodgers scratched Kershaw.

I wonder if baseball should keep the “no off days during a series” format. You can’t hide a lousy back end of the rotation and a backup catcher is bound to get a start. So it does credit a more complete team.
