How the Rays Won

As the Astros and Rays wake up on a Sunday morning, the Rays headed to Arlington Texas for the World Series and the Astros headed to Houston to disband, we can look back on a fascinating win by Tampa Bay. Here are the batting splits for the Astros in the series, and here are the batting splits for the Rays.

The Astros dominated offensively, yet the Rays outscored them 25-22. Note this isn’t a timing issue per se. The Astros hit better with men on base, and better with runners in scoring position. It seems to be a matter of home run timing. Houston hit nine home runs, eight of them solo shots, for a total of ten runs. Tampa Bay hit eleven home runs, seven of them solo shots, for a total of 16 runs.

Fielding played a part, as both teams allowed 21 earned runs, but the Astros allowed four unearned runs to the Rays one. Do the Astros win game two without Jose Altuve‘s errors? During the broadcast, Altuve was mentioned as a possible MVP candidate, as he had a fantastic series at the plate. With the loss of game two on his shoulders, however, he seems more like the goat than the hero.

Randy Arozarena did get the MVP nod. Five of his nine hits went for extra bases. In his 30 PA, he only put the ball in play for fielders 14 times, with two walks and ten strikeouts to go with his four homers. His swing for the fences approach produced a quarter of the Rays runs, and was a big reason the team won the series.

Congratulations to the Rays on their second AL pennant. They will face a great offense no matter who wins the NLCS, so we will see if this game plan works twice.
