Playoffs Today

The Dodgers “visit” the Rays in game five of the 2020 World Series Sunday night, the best of seven series knotted at two games apiece. The game starts at 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against Tyler Glasnow of the Rays in a rematch of game one.

Here are Kershaw’s post-season splits. Note that overall and in most base situations, Kershaw is very good. There are two situations in which batters hurt him. The first is man on third with less than two out, where his opposition slash line stands at .368/.292/.579. Note the low OBP is due to allow five sacrifice flies and no walks in the situation. Kershaw goes after hitters, and the hitters tend to put the bat on the ball. The other bad situation is Close and Late. That’s a plate appearance where the fielding team is trailing by a run, tied, or if a reliever entered the game, it would be a save situation. Opponents hit .417/.488/.722 against Kershaw then, 15 for 35 with two doubles and three home runs. Managers stuck with Kershaw too long in these situations.

Glasnow’s post-season splits show how the home run hurt his games. Eight of the 29 hits he allowed went for home runs, with four of those coming with men on base. Opponents drove in 20 runs against him, and thirteen of those runs were driven in with the homers. Like Kershaw, Glasnow was hurt by the Man on third, less than two out situation where opponents are four for five against him with no strikeouts and six RBI.

Enjoy!
