McDaniel Passes

Long-time reliever Lindy McDaniel died Saturday of Covid-19:

A lanky right-hander who generally relied on breaking stuff, McDaniel pitched for a total of five teams in both leagues — his longest stints were with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Yankees — and had success out of the bullpen as both a long man and a closer in an era before pitching specialization.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I remember McDaniel toward the end of his career when he pitched for the Yankees. My memory of him coming in early and pitching to the end doesn’t match reality precisely, but he did have a run in June 1970 where they Yankees used him exactly that way. He made five appearances, pitching 19 innings and finishing all five games. He posted a 1.89 ERA, walking two and striking out 14. Not a bad stretch for a long reliever.
