Former Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia announced his retirement today:

“I wasn’t in a good place. I grinded every day just to be able to play with my kids and just live a normal life,” Pedroia said. “My knee was bad, and I’m a young guy. I had the surgery, and a week later, I could tell I could walk without pain. I could do everything except run. I can’t run anymore, but who needs that. Once I had the surgery, nobody had ever played with a partial knee replacement. If it breaks, my life would be severely impacted by it.”

Pedroia seemed to always be in his prime. His rookie year came at age 23 in 2007, where posted a 3.7 fWAR. In 2016, his last good year, age 32, he posted a 4.9 fWAR. His worst season in that ten year stretch came in 2015 when he posted 2.3 WAR in just 93 games. He was an incredibly solid, steady, fun to watch player. I loved his home run swings. He could generate an impressive amount of power in his small frame.
