The Rays and Yankees square off once again as Tyler Glasnow takes on Jordan Montgomery in New York. Yankees fans booed a lackluster performance by the home team in the Bronx Friday night. Glasnow is off to a fantastic start, pitching 19 2/3 innings in three games, allowing just seven hits and three walks. This could be a huge leap forward for the 27 year old if he continues to maintain a high strikeout rate with improved control. Montgomery walked just two as well, but in just eleven innings. He was hurt by two home runs.
Once again Jacob deGrom tries to get a start as the Mets face Chi Chi Gonzalez in Colorado. The Mets ace is 0-1 despite an 0.64 ERA, based on eight hits and two walks in 14 innings. Gonzalez owns more walks than strikeouts this season (6 BB, 5 K), and is pretty close to even in his career (90 BB, 104 K). I’m not sure someone who pitches to contact is the best person to start at Coors Field. This is scheduled to be game one of a double header.
The Giants and Marlins seem to be holding their success from 2020 as Aaron Sanchez battles Sandy Alcantara in Miami. Sanchez failed to pick up a win in two starts despite a 2.70 ERA. It’s tough to get a win when limited to five innings. Alcantara owns a 3.61 ERA in 48 starts for the Marlins, but only an 11-20 record.
The Dodgers and Padres continue their series in San Diego with Clayton Kershaw facing Yu Darvish. With his last win, Clayton Kershaw is now 100 games over .500 for his career, 177-77. That’s a .697 winning percentage. In comparison, Baseball Reference has Cy Young 196 games over .500, 511-315, a .619 winnings percentage. Young was 105 games over .500 for Cleveland, 240-135, .640. Darvish allowed six runs in 17 2/3 innings so far, four of those coming on three home runs.
