Best Batter Today

There is only a slight change to the top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings today. Freddie Freeman of the Braves was the only member of the top five to play, and he drew two walks. That dropped him to third place. Corey Seager and Justin Turner of the Dodgers stand 1-2. Jose Ramirez of the Indians remains in fourth place, and the injured Ronald Acuna of the Braves sits in fifth place.

Moving up, however are too big names. Bryce Harper of the Phillies continued his hot hitting, going two for four with a walk and a home run in a 6-5 win against the Giants to move into sixth place. Mike Trout of the Angels singled and homered in a 7-4 Texas win to move into seventh place. Trout is batting .393 on the season. Trout is on of those players with a high enough BABIP that if he lowered his K rate, he could hit .400. Instead, he raised his K rate this season to 29% versus a career mark of 21%, but raised his BABIP to .533.

The best performance of the day goes to Matt Olson of the Athletics. He posted a three for five day with two home runs for a game score of 78. Six of the top eight game scores came from the 13-12 Oakland victory over Minnesota. Olson tended to be a three-true outcome player in his career, with a low BA, high OBP, and lots of power. This season, he’s hitting .316 without losing the walks or the power, and he did cut down his K rate.
