Games of the Day

Nick Pivetta takes on Lance Lynn as the Red Sox and White Sox play the rubber game of their series. Pivetta limits hits with a high strikeout rate, but gives a lot back with walks and home runs allowed. Lynn returns from a two-week stay on the illjured list. Lynn’s 2.59 ERA would lead the AL if he had enough innings. He needs to accumulate another 26 1/3 innings in the last three weeks to make that happen.

The Reds try to hold off the Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race as Sonny Gray battles J.A. Happ. Gray is 23-17 with a 3.34 ERA since joining the Reds. He struck out an impressive 412 batters in 345 innings with the team. Happ owns a 6.24 ERA for the season, but a 4.72 mark with the Cardinals. He’s done that despite allowing eight home runs in 34 1/3 innings.

The Padres send Blake Snell against the Dodgers and Max Scherzer. Snell continued posting 4+ ERAs in odd years. His control abandoned him with 69 walks in 128 innings. Scherzer is 5-0 since joining the Dodgers, a fitting replacement for Trevor Bauer. He walked 5 and struck out 63 in 43 innings for the Dodgers.
