Weekly Look at Offense

Every Monday Baseball Musings compares the offense of the current season to the previous year through the same number of weeks. This season, 2021 is compared to 2019 as that was the last full season of Major League Baseball. So far in 2021, games generated 9.06 runs compared to 9.69 runs in 2021, closing the gap a tiny bit. Home runs remain down about 0.35 per game, while other hits are down about 0.8 per game. That accounts for all the difference as walks and strikeouts are even with 2019. Between the less lively ball and fixing the stickiness issue, MLB landed right on the nine runs per game mark they wanted.

Note that in the last two weeks, HBP per game are about 0.68 per game, the lowest two week period this season. The worry that removing stickiness would lead to more hit batters proved not to be true. Here is the spreadsheet with runs per week since 2015.
