Best Batter Today

Juan Soto of the Nationals returns to the top spot in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings after a one for two Friday with three walks. The Rockies take the game 9-8, however, as the Nationals bullpen fails again. Soto now leads his former teammate, Bryce Harper of the Phillies, by one point as Harper posts a one for four with a double in a 4-3 win over the Mets. The Phillies gain a game on the Braves in the race for the NL East title.

Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals remains in third place as he goes two for four with a double as St. Louis holds off San Diego in the NL Wild Card race with an 8-2 victory. Matt Olson of the Athletics moves back into the top five as he collects two hits and a walk in a 5-4 win over the Angels. That helps keep Oakland’s wild card hopes alive. Kyle Tucker of the Astros takes an 0 for 4 in a 4-3 win over Arizona for fifth place.

The highest game score of the night goes to Joey Gallo of the Yankees, a 79. Gallo hits a single and two home runs, part of a five home run attack by New York as they down Cleveland 8-0. Gallo collected 25 hits for the Yankees in 45 games, six of them doubles and twelve of them home runs.
