Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers comes up in the bottom of the sixth inning after collecting singles in his first two at bats. He breaks his bat on his swing, but still sends the ball through the shortstop hole for his third single of the game. That brings his career hit total to 2,999. He needs one more for the 3000 club, and with the Yankees beating the Tigers 3-1, he probably will get one more chance tonight.

Update: A Harold Castro double ties the game at three at the end of six innings.

Update: Cabrera would be the fourth hitter in the seventh inning if a Tigers hitter can reach.

Update: Tigers go 1-2-3 in the seventh. Cabrera will lead off the eighth inning. The Yankees lead 4-3.

Update: Cabrera is coming to bat.

Update: The Yankees lead 5-3 as Cabrera approaches the plate in the eighth. Clay Holmes comes on to pitch for the Yankees. Cabrera fouls off the first pitch, then swings and misses at the second. The third pitch is wasted low and outside. Pitch four is 97 MPH in the strike zone, but Cabrera tips it into the glove of the catcher. We may have to wait until tomorrow for the milestone.

Update: The Yankees win 5-3. Turn in tomorrow, at 1 PM EDT.
