Catching Tradition

When Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman came up on Saturday, I was reminded about the hype surrounding Matt Wieters. Rutschman immediately impressed recording a triple as his first hit. I’ve been trying to figure out how often a catcher gets a triple as his first hit, and in doing so I noticed that Matt Wieters tripled for his first hit. It came in the fifth inning of his second game. Wieters, as a hitter, didn’t really live up to the hype, but Orioles do seem to have a tradition in the making.

Update: Between Weiters and Rutschman, Brad Davis of the Marlins was catching when he collected a triple for his first hit.
