Best Batter Today

Sunday’s games provided a slight reordering of the top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals stays of top despite an 0 for 4 in a 4-0 Phillies win. His teammate, Nolan Arenado, singled in four trips but drops to fourth behind the injured Bryce Harper of the Phillies, who sits in third place.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros doubles in four trips to stay in second place, and now has a ten point lead over third. Houston beats the Angels 4-2. Pete Alonso of the Mets sits fifth after an 0 for 4 in a 4-1 win over Texas.

Jeremy Pena of the Astros posts the highest game score of the day, an 85. The rookie replacement for Carlos Correa collects four hits in five plate appearances, including two home runs. The second broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth for the Astros win.

Pena owns a .279/.328/.479 slash line in his age 24 season. He’s not exactly a young phenom, but he’s turning out to be a solid replacement for Correa. His .200 isolated power is very good, and his ratio of hits to walks indicates he’ll be a pretty good Beat the Streak choice as his career progresses.
