Bad Umpiring

Two out calls at the plate were overturned on Sunday afternoon as umpires failed to notice the catchers were not giving batters a lane to the plate. Rocco Baldelli of the Twins received an ejection for arguing about the reversal:

“It’s one of the worst moments I think we’ve seen of umpiring in any game I’ve ever been a part of in baseball, and I think it was pathetic what just played out,” said Baldelli, who was ejected for arguing the call, the eighth time in his career he was thrown out of a game and third this season.

In watching the video, I’d say overturning the call was the right play. A similar thing happened in the Pirates-Orioles game, this time Orioles manager Brandon Hyde received the ejection.

While driving home from Cleveland, I was listening to the Yankees at the Cardinals. The Cardinals radio team noticed early on that the home plate umpire was missing calls by a lot. He started by calling pitches that were clearly strikes balls, then later in the game started calling pitches well off the plate balls. It was not once side, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone received an ejection for arguing about a ball that was two inches off the plate being called a strike. It’s one reason the nine inning, 12-9 Cardinals victory took 4:25.
