Slow Market

Free agent activity is down to a trickle after last season’s pre-lockout signing frenzy. I don’t expect much this week as teams are likely taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday. We are likely back to the “best deal comes at the last minute” mode as well, so players and teams should be taking time to mull over deals to put some pressure on the other side.

Unlike last season, no team appears to be in tear down mode. Oakland traded away their talent in the 2021-2022 winter. That allowed the Braves, for example, to let Freddie Freeman walk and pick up a younger Matt Olson for prospects and a manageable long-term contract. At the moment, no team is shedding talent.

Weeks like this make me miss George Steinbrenner running the Yankees. He would make moves just to keep the Yankees in the news. He did not believe in holidays or weekends. He and his staff was always working, and he dragged along the rest of the league as they tried to keep up with him.
