It’s All About the Bassitt

The Blue Jays agree with pitcher Chris Bassitt on a three-year, $63 million deal:

Bassitt, who will turn 34 in February, was among the most sought-after starters on the market and will receive the third highest per-year salary among free agent pitchers, behind Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander. Bassitt has kept similar company in recent years, as his 3.29 ERA since 2018 ranks 11th in MLB among pitchers with at least 100 starts.

Here is the full list. Note that Bassitt posts good three-true outcomes, but none of them make you go, “Wow!” He is a solid pitcher to put in the middle of a rotation. He’s also respected among opponents:

Which pitcher — not on your squad — would you most want to hand the ball to with your season on the line?

Bob Melvin, San Diego Padres: Chris Bassitt. Because he’s pitched for me before, I know what he’s about, and I’m probably biased with this one.

Again, the contract seems about right, with the Blue Jays paying him for six to seven WAR over the three years.
