Signing Roundup

Carlos Rodon joins the Yankees on a six-year, $162 million contract:

Rodon, 30, was the top pitcher left on the market after he opted out of a contract with the San Francisco Giants following last season. He was 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 2022, pitching a career-high 178 innings over 31 starts. He also earned his second straight All-Star selection.

This looks to me like a very good contract for the Yankees. While Rodon posted impressive seasons in 2021 and 2022, his career previous to that was just okay. I estimate he’ll produce 18 WAR over the life of his contract, meaning the Yankees are paying $9 million per WAR.

That WAR estimate could turn out to be very low. If he can post a couple of five WAR seasons in there, the Yankees likely wind up with some residual value at the end of six seasons.

The White Sox bring on Andrew Benintendi for five seasons:

Outfielder Andrew Benintendi and the Chicago White Sox agreed on a five-year, $75 million contract Friday, sources told ESPN, linking one of the game’s premier bat-to-ball hitters with a team whose contact-oriented approach is one of its offensive hallmarks.

This gives the White Sox a good excuse to move Tim Anderson into the second slot. Anderson, with a high BA and a lower walk rate will be good at moving Benintendi along, while Benintendi’s speed will give Anderson plenty of opportunities to drive in the table setter. The contract pays Benintendi like a 1.5 WAR player, and that hits the nail on the head.

Finally, they Twins sign Joey Gallo to a one year, $11 million deal. It a good risk. On the upside, Gallo returns to his three WAR performances with the Rangers, and the Twins get production cheap. The downside is he replaced Gary Sanchez‘s bat.

I don’t see Gallo as a good risk. Maybe he’ll fool me and you’ll be right, but we’re talking about a guy who hasn’t been above the Mendoza line since 2019. Maybe he regains that form, and maybe banning the shift will help him. But I wouldn’t count on it.
