The Yankees retired too many numbers:
Maybe they should unretire the numbers of people who weren’t all time greats.
Other suggestions:
- Start using mathematical constants. Give someone ? (Pi) and i.
- Throw a negative sign in front of the number. A really bad shortstop could wear -2 for the Yankees, the anti-Jeter.
- Make the digits smaller and more on the back. Aaron Judge is already at 99.
- Use fractions! I’d want to be 3/4 in honor of Ruth and Gehrig.
- Go really old school, and take numbers off the uniforms!
The Yankees need to be creative.
All new Yankee numbers should be player birthdates! This conveys some actual information, which is an additional benefit. The question is what format to use. Would Anthony Volpe be 4/28/2001 or 04282001? or 4/28/21 or 042801? Maybe we don’t want uniform numbers to start with a zero, so YearMonthDate: 20010428. The possibilities are literally endless, which guarantees they’ll never run out of numbers.
Definitely YYYYMMDD.
Or they could use social security numbers!
Surely a player who was the opposite of Jeter would be a really good shortstop? ?
