Back to Losing

The Athletics lost their eighth straight game Thursday afternoon, the Guardians taking the contest 6-1. Oakland managed just three hits in the game with four walks. None of the hits went for extra bases. JP Sears pitched a good game, and left after seven innings with Oakland down 2-1. Yacksel Rios gave up four runs in the eighth inning to cement the win for Cleveland.

The loss drops Oakland to 19-58, a .247 winnings percentage. They are once again below the 1962 New York Mets who went 40 and 120, a .250 WPCT. The lowest winning percentage that contains 19 wins in a 77 game sample is .345. A .345 team has a 0.035 probability of winning no more than 21 games, which would beat the WPCT of the 1962 Mets. If Oakland was actually a replacement level team, a .296 winning percentage, that probability goes up to 0.193. Both those probabilities are a bit too high for comfort.
