Best Batter Today

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels remains on top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He posted a three for five with a double and home run in a 7-4 Rockies win in Colorado. Juan Soto moves into second place as he posts the third highest game score of the day, a 75, in a 13-3 win over his old team, Washington. Soto went two for three with two walks, a double, and a home run.

You may notice that Soto gained a lot of ground on Ohtani, even though Ohtani posted a game score of 70. The reason for that is the adjustment for the environment. Over the last 100 games at Petco Park, the average runs per game is 7.61. At Coors Field, it’s 11.66. The game scores are adjusted for the environment, so Soto gets a big boost for a great game at a tough park, and Ohtani gets knocked down for a great game at an easy park.

Luis Arraez of the Marlins sits in third place after a three for four in a 3-1 Pirates win, breaking Pittsburgh’s losing streak. Arraez raised his batting average to .402 and his OBP to .452. The probability of him hitting .400 for the season now stands at about 0.0087, or one chance in 115. We are getting to the point where hitting .400 for the season is realistic. On the flip side, there is an excellent chance of him finishing with a very high BA. His expected final average right now would be .367.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians stands fourth as he homered in four trips to the plate in a 7-1 Milwaukee win. In that game, Willy Adames of the Brewers posted the best game score of the night, an 88, as he collect four hits in five at bats with a double and two home runs. He beats out the cycle by Elly De La Cruz of the Reds by three points. Adames is another batter who needed a big game, as he is underperforming his career averages by quite a bit.
