Best Batter Today

Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners moves into first place on the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with another multi-hit game in a 7-0 win over Oakland. Rodriguez posted a four for five with a double and a home run, driving in three runs and score three. His game score of 80 came in fourth best on the day as he takes a one point lead over Mookie Betts of the Dodgers.

Betts drew a walk in a 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks. His teammate, Freddie Freeman went one for five with a home run to rank fourth.

Moving ahead of Freeman by 0.2 points is Ronald Acuna Jr.of the Braves. Acuna also goes four for five with a double and a homer, and adds a walk for the second highest game score of the day, an 85. He scored four runs and drove in five. His teammate, Matt Olson, tripled and drew two walks for fifth place. Olson hit one triple in his career coming into 2023, but that was his third of the season. The Braves won in Coors Field 14-4 over the Rockies.

Unfortunately, two fans ran on the field and one of them knocked down Acuna:

One fan got his arms against Acuña during the middle of the seventh inning, just after Atlanta scored four runs to open a 9-4 lead. Two security people quickly grabbed the fan and, as they tried to drag him away, a third security person approached.

A second fan then sprinted toward the group, knocking down Acuña, and that fan was tackled as one of the security people chased him down.

Acuña wasn’t injured and remained in the game.

It appeared they were not trying to attack Acuna, but wanted to get a picture with him. I suspect they are going to spend some time in jail.

For the second day in a row, an Astros hitter posted the highest game score of the day. Yordan Alvarez went four for four with two walks and a home run for a score of 87. Alvarez ranked high until his June injury. His power is down in his comeback from that, and now ranks 13th.

The Astros beat the Red Sox 13-5, but Alvarez’s heroics won’t be the ones remembered. Jose Altuve hit for the cycle, with a four for six in the game for the third highest game score of the day, an 82.

Walking to the plate in the eighth inning, Jose Altuve was well aware of his personal scoreboard for the day: a single, a double and a triple.

“It’s kind of like in your mind, but you don’t want to change your whole approach,” he said. “I was just thinking about getting a pitch and trying to drive it.”

He drove it plenty far enough.

Altuve struck out swinging to lead off the game, then doubled in the third, singled in the fifth and tripled in the sixth. His homer made him the first Astros player to hit for the cycle since Brandon Barnes against Seattle on July 19, 2013. Hitting second for the Astros that day was a 23-year-old Altuve.

Congratulations to Altuve on the feat! He now ranks 15th on the list.

There needs to be significant prison time (1 year+, jail is usually less than a year) for those “fans.” I don’t like Altuve, but they could have caused a career ending injury, costing him possibly $100 million.

    Do not rush the stage.
