Corrales Passes

Former catcher and MLB manager Pat Corrales died Sunday.

“Over the course of a baseball career that spanned more than six decades as a player, coach, manager and executive, Pat became a well-respected baseball lifer,” the Phillies said in a statement posted to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. “Out heartfelt condolences go out to Pat’s family and all those who were fortunate to know him.”

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Corrales hit like a back-up catcher during his career, with a .216/.291/.276 slash line, with just 35 of his 166 hits going for extra bases. His peak years at age 27 and 28 were good, where he produced OBPs of .349 and .346. His numbers fell off after that, but he managed to stick around four more seasons.

He had a bit more success as a manager, leading the Rangers, Phillies, and Indians to winning records. He was not able to repeat those seasons, and in each case a fall off the next season eventually led to his dismissal.
