The Phillies and Diamondbacks batters finished the regular season at opposite ends of the strikeout rankings, the Phillies among the teams with the most Ks, the Diamondbacks down at the low end. Tuesday’s game saw that reverse. The DBacks batters struck out 13 times in 33 plate appearance, the three through six hitting accounting for eight of those Ks. It’s tough to drive in runs when the ball in in the catcher’s mitt, and Arizona was 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies, on the other hand, struck out just six times, helping them pick up eleven hits as balls kept finding holes. Two of those Ks came from the ninth slot, so the top of the order was able to string together hits for big rallies. All six of the Ks came against starter Merrill Kelly, as the Arizona bullpen face 17 batters without recording a strikeout.
We’ll see if the Diamondbacks can get back to putting the ball in play once they are in front of their own fans.
