Playoffs Today

Game four of the 2023 World Series takes place at 8 PM EDT in Phoenix, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Andrew Heaney of the Rangers faces Joe Mantiply of the Diamondbacks. This is a bullpen game, although more for the Diamondbacks than for the Rangers. Andrew Heaney only made starts from 2015 through the first half of 2021. After moving to the Yankees in the middle of that season, he began working as both a starter and a reliever. For Texas this season he made 28 starts, going 9-6 with a 4.08 ERA in 136 2/3 innings. As a reliever, he posted a 5.06 ERA in 10 2/3 innings, but struck out 14. In the post-season, he made two starts and two relief appearances, and pitched better as a reliever.

For Texas, however, Heaney is capable of giving them three or four innings, which means the Rangers might be able to avoid their worst relievers.

Mantiply made three opens during the regular season. He averaged an inning per start, so expect to see lots of pitchers used by the Diamondbacks tonight. Arizona relievers held opponents to a .218/.321/.329 slash line. The ability to limit power is important against Texas, so there is a chance this strategy works.

Enjoy!

On the one hand, I wonder whether this is the first intentional bullpen game in World Series history; at the least, I’d bet it’s the first time both teams are using the strategy.
On the other hand, I feel like half the World Series games lately have ended up being bullpen games, in a way.
