Hannan Passes

Former pitcher Jim Hannan died.

Hannan remained in the game long after his 10-year playing career came to an end. He helped found the MLB Players Alumni Association in 1982 and served as the organization’s first president. He held that role until 1986. Hannan remained involved with the MLBPAA long past that stint, serving as its chairman of the board from 1996 until this year.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Hannan profiled as a high walk, low strikeout pitcher, the rates of the two stats nearly even across his career. Despite poor K numbers, Hannan allowed fewer hits than innings pitched 807 hits in 822 innings. His best season came in 1968, when he accumulated 2.3 of his 2.2 career rWAR. He brought his walks under control, and took advantage of the lack of power in the league to post a 2.84 ERA with a 10-6 record.
