Chris Sale takes the mound for the Braves as Rangers Suarez tries to help the Phillies to their first win of the season. Sale’s last good season came in 2019, and it was more good in process than results. Injuries since that time limited him to 31 games His 2023 season was a bit like his 2019 season; a high ERA but good three-true outcomes. Now age 35, we’ll see what he has left. Suarez owns a K rate a bit low and a walk rate a bit high, but his ability to induce ground balls keeps him out of big trouble.

Jack Flaherty makes his Tigers debut as he faces Erick Fedde and the White Sox. Flaherty showed a lack of control the last two seasons, and with it a high BABIP. The result was a .281 BA and .372 OBP against him. Fedde spent 2023 in Korea where he posted outstanding three-true outcomes and a miniscule ERA. The White Sox hope he can carry some of that back to the majors.

Finally, Steven Matz and Gavin Stone square off in the Sunday night game as the Cardinals finish their series with the Dodgers. Matz owns a 3.18 ERA against the Dodgers in his career despite giving up a high rate of walks and home runs. Stone did little with this cup of coffee in 2023, but his minor league career showed him to be a high strikeout, low home run pitcher. The Dodgers will take that.
