24 or 6 T 8

The 2024 season produced a high number of low ERA pitchers so far. The average team played 52 games. For pitchers with at least 52 IP, twenty four of the 80 ERA qualifiers own ERAs under three, six of them under two. Shota Imanaga comes in at 0.84. If he continues, comparisons will be made to Bob Gibson and his 1968 season.

The majors did not start play until mid April at that time so teams averaged 52 games around June 7th. For pitchers with at least 52 inning on that date, 52 of the 81 pitchers owned ERAs under three, and fifteen came in under two. Don Drysdale led with a 1.21 mark, and Gibson ranked sixth at 1.52.

The other cool thing here is that 20 teams produced 81 ERA qualifiers, or about four per team. In other words, four starters per team were going deep enough in games to qualify for the ERA title. The 80 qualifiers we have today are from 30 teams, so only 2 2/3 starters per team make the list.
