Best Batter Today

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays uses a four for five day with a double to move into fifth place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Guerrero got off to a slow start, drawing walks but not much else through his first 27 games, resulting in a .206/.319/.324 slash line. Since then, he’s hitting .403/.473/.536. It’s a nice example of how much variation can occur in small sample sizes, even in great hitters.

Guerrero’s efforts did not lead to a win, however, as the Tigers took the game 14-11. Matt Vierling hit a walk off home run in the ninth, part of a four for six day with two home runs and four RBI. That game score of 84 topped the day.

The top four in the ranking did not change. Aaron Judge and Juan Soto of the Yankees remain one and two respectively. Judge singled while Soto singled and walked in the 5-2 Padres win. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians walked twice in the 5-4 win over the Angels and sits in third place. Kyle Tucker of the Astros homered and walked in a 5-2 win over the Athletics for fourth place.
