Looking at the Team Game Score Comparison for 2024, the Mets stand out as the only team without ten wins from their starters. Their average game score comes in at 50.3, so I would expect them to be a little closer to .500. Instead, the Mets starters own an 8-21 record.

The good news is that’s no where near the most losses by a starting staff. The Angels, White Sox, and Athletics all own a total of 28 losses from their starters.

Why so few wins for the Mets? Their K’s are a bit low and their walks are a bit high (plus they hit batters). They do have 17 quality starts, but the bullpen allows offense at the same rates as the starters, so the Mets don’t go into shutdown mode when the starters leave. With the offense being 0.7 runs per game worse than their opponents, there is little room to catch up once the bullpens are in play.
