Nearly as Close as Can Be

The Nationals beat the Mets 1-0 in Washington’s annual Independence Day Game, which started at 11 AM EDT. One wonders if the batters did not get a good night’s sleep, as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when Jesse Winker came up as a pinch hitter and homered. That was enough for a 1-0 Nats win. That’s tied for the seventh closest game of the season (absolute value of the score difference at the end of each half inning divided by the number of half innings) at 0.12.

Jake Irvin through eight innings of one-hit shutout ball, the longest outing of his career. That lowered his ERA to 2.80.
