Ferraro Passes

Former player, coach, and manager Mike Ferraro died last Saturday:

Former Yankees infielder and coach Mike Ferraro died last Saturday at 79 years old, the team announced.

A cause of death was not revealed.

Ferraro, who played for the team in 1966 and 1968, tied an MLB record for third basemen with 11 assists in a nine-inning game in a 4-1 win over the Senators.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Ferraro hit poorly at the major league level, although in the minors he posted a decent BA and OBP. His major league career lasted just 162 games over four seasons.

He managed well at the minor league level, and coached and managed at the major league level. Dick Howser took a bullet for Ferraro, George Steinbrenner firing Howser after Howser refused to fire Ferraro after a bad send of Willie Randolph in the 1980 playoffs. Ferraro managed the Royals after Howser was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
