Bido, Bido, Flat on His Seato

Oakland shuts out Toronto 1-0 behind six shutout innings by Osvaldo Bido and three hitless innings by the bullpen. Bido lowers his ERA to 3.92 in 39 innings with the Athletics this seadon. He’s only allowed two home runs in that time. He’s done a better job of keeping the ball in the park since he reached the majors.

Valdimir Guerrero of the Blue Jays extended his hit streak to 22 games with a one for four.

I became aware of the song when I was young and bought a Guinness Book of World Records. The original title of the song was, “I’m a Cranky Old Yank in a Clanky Old Tank on the Streets of Yokohama with My Honolulu Mama Doin’ Those Beat-o, Beat-o Flat-On-My-Seat-o, Hirohito Blues.” That held the record for longest song title. Carmichael later shortened the title.

There is another Carmichael song I associate with a baseball player. He appeared on the Flintstones singing a song called “Yabba Dabba Doo”. The chorus relates directly to baseball:

So if someday the bases are loaded
    And they’re countin’ on you
    You just can’t strike out
    If you’ll up and shout
    Yabba-Dabba-Dabba
    Yabba-Dabba-Dabba
    Yabba-Dabba-Dabba-Dabba-Doo!

Then Akil Baddoo came into the majors, and this was his song1

Yet another ear worm to enter my consciousness!

I like replacing “way beyond the sea” with “Raul Mondesi” when I hear the Del-Vikings’ “Come and Go with Me”
