Games of the Day

The Astros and Orioles continue their battle in Baltimore as Framber Valdez takes on Albert Suarez. Since the start of the 2018 season, Valdez’s first in the majors, he ranks second in fewest HR allowed per 9 IP a 0.74 (800 IP). Only Logan Webb does better. Suarez is tough this season on sluggers as well, allowing just six homers in 96 1/3 innings.

The Giants and Mariners meet in Seattle as new Mariner’s manager Dan Wilson tries to make it two wins in a row. Blake Snell faces George Kirby. Snell only owns five decisions in fourteen starts, a 2-3 record. Tom Tango’s assigned wins tracker puts him at 5-2. Kirby would be 11-9 instead of 9-9 by the same formula.

Assigned wins turns out to be relevant to the Phillies at the Royals. Ranger Suarez takes the road mound against Brady Singer. Singer stands 9-8 with a 3.18 ERA, but assigned wins puts him at 14-6. Suarez is right on his assigned wins number, but would have one less loss.

Note that in an era when it is tougher to get a win by the historical rules, Tango’s formula might be a much better way to award the Ws and Ls.

Enjoy!
