Francona Returns

The Reds turn to Terry Francona to lead the team for the next three seasons:

Last night, shortly after the New York Mets came from behind in the 9th inning to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers and advance in the playoffs, it was reported that the Cincinnati Reds were hiring Terry Francona to be their next manager. This morning it was made official. Francona signed a 3-year contract to be the Reds manager through 2027. His deal also includes an option year for 2028.

No one seems to have talked to Francona yet, but this quote from his retirement stands out:

“I need to go home and get healthy and see what I miss about the game,” Francona said at the time. “I don’t foresee managing again.”

I suspect healthy is a relative term for Francona. His illnesses appeared to be chronic, but maybe new drugs or new treatments allow him to stay in the dugout. I would hope the Reds would have made sure of that before bringing him on board.
