Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees stays atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings, but just barely. He drew a walk in five trips to the plate in a 6-5 win over the Royals. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers went two for five with a home run to close the gap with Judge to less than two points.

Judge’s teammate, Juan Soto, posted a three for five night with a double. He ranks fourth, four points behind the vacationing Vladimir Guerrero Jr.and six points ahead of Yordan Alvarez.

Three batters recorded game scores of 65, the highest on the day. David Fry of the Guardians went two for three with a walk and two RBI. He improved in his sophomore season, with 33 of his 88 hits going for extra bases. MJ Melendez of the Royals posted a two for four with a home run, matched in game score by Gleyber Torres of the Yankees, one for three with a home run and two walks. Melendez’s career slugging percentage of .397 doesn’t look like much, but his isolated power comes in at a healthy .176. Torres saw his home run power fall off from the last two seasons, but he would be a big help to the Yankees if it came back for their playoff run.
