Gerrit Cole loads the base twice in the top of the fifth inning. He leaves the game with the Yankees leading the Guardians 3-1, having given up six hits and four walks.
One sign of trouble was that Cole had problems putting away batters. More than once a Guardians hitter fouled off a few pitches to push up Cole’s count.
Clay Holmes comes in and gives up a run scoring force out, and the Yankees lead is down to 3-2 then walks the next batter to load the bases again.
Update: Austin Hedges falls behind 0-2, then swings and misses to end the inning. Once again, the Yankees pitching and defense bends, but doesn’t break.
