Unusual Pen Performance

Entering today, since the start of the 2005 season, the Padres bullpen allowed the fewest runs per nine innings in the National League, 4.02. A big reason is their ability to limit home runs, just 17.7 per 200 innings. That script did not play out Sunday in Philadelphia.

Edward Mujica and Edwin Moreno combined to allow three runs in 1+ innings of work, including two home runs as the Phillies came back late from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Padres 5-4. Raul Ibanez hit the two-run game winner in the bottom of the ninth off Moreno. It might have something to do with the parks, as PETCO is much friendlier to pitchers than Citizen’s Bank Park.
