No Runs Wednesday

What’s going on in the National League today? Atlanta just completed the third shutout of the day, and Milwaukee is two outs away from the fourth. These aren’t blow outs, either. Jurrjens and Lannan each keep the other team off the scoreboard, Lannan for seven innings and Jurrjens for 7 2/3 as the Braves win 1-0.

The Phillies just scored, so that game won’t be a shutout, but it’s also very low scoring at 3-1.

Update: Just to join in the fun, the Royals shut out the Indians 2-0 as Brian Bannister makes a successful return to the majors. It was a typical low strikeout start for Brian, but he only allowed four hits and two walks in his six innings of work. He needs a good defense behind him, and he got that tonight.

Update: The Brewers win 3-1. Looper doesn’t strike out a batter as he pitches six shutout innings.

Update: The Reds lead the Cubs 1-0 after six.

Update: As of 9:54 PM, there have been 32 runs scored in the NL today with three games still in progress. The fewest runs scored in an eight game NL schedule since 1957 is 39, accomplished on 9/28/1966 and 8/6/1978. Since the NL expanded to 16 teams, on a day with no double headers, the low is 40 set 9/22/2005.

Update: The NL games are finished as the Reds add a shutout, a 3-0 win over the Cubs. Cueto pitched seven shutout innings in that one. The Astros down the Dodgers in a squeaker, 6-5, and the Cardinals beat the Mets 5-2. That’s 40 runs, tying the lowest runs scored in eight NL games since the league expanded to 16 teams in 1998.
