Power Outage

The Mets have gone 60 innings without a home run.

Do you remember the last time the Mets hit a home run? Anyone? Bueller?

The correct answer: the eighth inning of last Wednesday’s game against Atlanta, when Gary Sheffield hit a bases-empty blast off Rafael Soriano. Since then, 60 innings have passed, and no easy trots around the bases.

I count 105 players with at least one home run in the last six days of games. The cross-town rival Yankees have two players with four each.

The ballpark strikes. I know we’ve just seen a handful of games and we have to wait until the weather warms up. But the Mets have hit 14 homeruns at home in 20 games.

Only the offensively challenged Braves and Giants have a lower rate of home-park roundtripper production. The Padres, for crying out loud, have homered more often per game at PETCO.

With Delgado out and that enormous ballpark suppressing homers, I expect the Mets may have a few homerless streaks this year.

But they should easily lead the league in triples. They’ve got almost twice as many triples at home as any other team in the NL. There’s a lot of room for that ball to roll and roll at Citi Field.

Um, I just realized the Mets latest homerless streak has come mainly on the road. Well, okay, but there might be a few more streaks in the future thanks to their home park.

Sounds like the Mets need help. I’m sure they could snag Big Papi from the Red Sox for, I dunno, a bag of sunflower seeds.

so which will it be first – Ortiz HR or mets HR? maybe they’ll duke it out this weekend for breaking the homerless streak (I believe Lester is going for the sox, and he’s been giving up many big fly’s this year, so advantage Mets)

Weren’t there a bunch of 1980s era Cardinal teams that were hard pressed to break Maris’ record of 61 every year?
