If you’re looking to take a late lunch and watch baseball, you could do worse than the finale of the Texas-Detroit series. Kevin Millwood takes on Edwin Jackson in a battle of two starters who found their groove this season. Millwood is using a low walk total to mask his high home run rate, while Jackson is allowing fewer walks and fewer home runs, not needing to hide any weaknesses.

An hour later, you might want to flip over to Cleveland at Kansas City where Carl Pavano takes on this year’s AL wonder Zack Greinke. The Indians are getting what they paid for in Pavano, a low-rent high ERA. He’s allowing a high slugging percentage, especially with men on base when it really hurts. So far, Greinke revealed no flaws in his game. He pitches well home and road. Neither lefties nor righties hit him. He gets better with men on base, even when few reach. His strikeout and walk rates are fantastic, and he hasn’t allowed a home run in 60 innings. He’s the perfect pitcher right now. Note that he’s pitching better than Gibson did through eight starts in 1968, although Bob put in more innings, including consecutive starts in which he went 12 and 11 innings.

The Yankees eight game winning streak is the longest in the majors as they host the Baltimore Orioles. There will be some interest in Joba Chamberlain facing Aubrey Huff due to the fist pumping incident the last time Joba pitched against Baltimore. What’s more interesting is to see if the extra warm up time before the game keeps Chamberlain effective in the first inning. He’ll take on Adam Eaton, who brings a 10.93 road ERA into Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox go for a sweep of the Blue Jays, which would close the gap in the AL East to 1/2 game. Robert Ray takes the hill for Toronto to try to push the lead back to 2 1/2 games. So far Ray’s been a low strikeout pitcher who also holds opponents hits to a minimum. Lester’s jump in strikeouts should be a positive for him, but his home runs allowed jumped more, and his ERA soared with it.

Finally, Joe Saunders and Erik Bedard face off as the Mariners try to earn a split in the four-game series. Saunders is 5-1 against the Mariners in his career, although with a 4.12 ERA he’s had some help from his offense. Bedard has yet to win at home this season despite a 1.38 ERA in two starts at Safeco Field.

Enjoy!

If I’m remembering correctly, it would also be important to note that the mound was lowered in 1969 after and because of Gibson’s ridiculous season.
