The Red Sox started their “B” lineup tonight, with Drew and Pedroia sitting, Lugo at short, Green at second, Baldelli in right and call-up Aaron Bates at first. Rookie Brett Anderson, who came into the game with a 5.45 ERA, tossed a two-hit shutout for his first complete game. He’s made a couple of good starts this season, including a short shutout, but this was far and away his best outing of the season. His strikeout and walk rates were good all season, and tonight he struck out nine while walking two. A win like this at Fenway against one of the best offenses in the league should help his confidence a great deal. The Athletics score five run against John Smoltz and win the game 6-0.
