The Rangers and Angels played to break a tie in the AL West Monday night and LAnaheim walked away with an easy 9-4 win. Jered Weaver allowed three runs but pitched well, walking one and striking out nine over seven innings of work. Kevin Millwood pitched his shortest and worst outing of the year, giving up all nine runs in five innings. Juan Rivera continued his bid for comeback player of the year with a three for four night, driving in two. Rivera is at .312/.353/.516, somewhat making up for Vlad Guerrero’s lack of offense.
The Mariners kept pace with a 5-0 win over Baltimore. Jarrod Washburn tossed a one-hit shutout.
Nick Markakis had the only hit off Washburn (4-5), a two-out single in the fourth. Washburn faced just one batter over the minimum, issuing no walks and striking out three in his 110-pitch effort.
At 3.08, Washburn is posting the lowest ERA of his career. Despite last night, his strikeouts are up this season. That seems to have led to a reduction in his hits allowed.
Ichrio went one for five to lower his batting average to .360. Since he hit his high BA of .373 on June 30, Ichiro is just 6 for 28.
In the National League, Pablo Sandoval hit a grand slam home run in the fifth to give the Giants a 5-1 lead over the Marlins, and the team held on to win the game 5-4. Sandoval kills opponents in San Francisco, hitting .397 with a .684 slugging percentage at home.
In the battle for the bottom of the division, Arizona picked up a game on San Diego with a 6-5 win. Tony Gwynn continues to be a bright spot for the Padres, however. He went three for five Tuesday night, raising his OBA to .373. He’s turned into a fine table setter for the Padres.
