He’s right about the second point by James, but is he willfully misreading the “makes you young” metaphor?

Yeah. Steroids make you “bigger, stronger, faster”. Well “stronger & faster” are hallmarks of being younger, while bigger can be, if it’s not your gut that’s getting bigger.

Perhaps James should have clarified more that it appears that steroids help you resist the effects of aging for a longer time, so that 39 is the new 27.

The main thrust I got from James’ article was that new chemistry & biology are coming down the pike that will help everyone (not just athletes) resist aging — something that human beings have wanted for ever — and that we are going to have to learn to deal with it.

Gambling gets players banned, and there are obvious problems with the sport if people start perceiving that games are being thrown.

Steroid use is a massive grey area, and its hard to come up with a compelling logical reason why reconstructive surgery, which as also not available to earlier players, is OK but using anti-aging or muscle building drugs isn’t OK.

Plus are you really going to keep Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens out of the Hall of Fame? Bonds belongs there about as much as Ty Cobb.
